If you are planning to apply for an Australian Student visa, staying informed about these changes will help ensure a smooth application process.
### The New National Planning Level (NPL)
For 2026, the Australian Government has set the National Planning Level (NPL) for international student places at 295,000. This reflects an increase of 25,000 new international student places compared to the previous year, offering more opportunities for students globally to pursue their education in Australia.
### Updated Visa Processing Priorities (MD115)
Australia utilizes a priority processing system to determine how quickly Student visa applications are reviewed.
Prior to 14 November 2025: Offshore applications lodged before this date continue to be prioritized under the previous framework, Ministerial Direction 111 (MD111).
On or after 14 November 2025: All new offshore Student visa applications are now processed under the newly implemented Ministerial Direction 115 (MD115) for the 2026 intake.
Note: The core eligibility requirements and the general application process for the Subclass 500 Student visa remain exactly the same. The update primarily changes how the government prioritizes and manages the queue internally.
### Tips for a Smooth Application Process
To prevent unexpected delays or potential visa refusals, applicants are strongly encouraged to lodge their applications as early as possible. Ensure your application is entirely complete at the time of lodgement by double-checking that all required documentation, correct personal details, and valid Confirmations of Enrolment (CoE) are included.
